Diederik Wissels

Born in Rotterdam and based in Brussels, Diederik Wissels has become one of the most lyrical and sensitive voices in European jazz. His piano playing is marked by understated elegance and emotional depth, qualities that have led him to collaborate with legendary artists including Chet Baker, Joe Henderson, Toots Thielemans, and Kenny Wheeler. For many listeners, Wissels is best known for his long-standing partnership with Belgian vocalist David Linx, which produced a series of acclaimed albums such as Bandarkâh and One Heart, Three Voices. In recent years, he has forged a new creative path with Portuguese singer and lyricist Ana Rocha, blending jazz, chamber music, and poetic storytelling on albums like Secrecy (2020),Yearn (2023), and Sleepless (2024, with Nicolas Kummert). Their forthcoming release, Come What May (2025), continues this evolution in a lyrical trio setting. Beyond the stage and studio, Wissels is a devoted educator, teaching jazz piano and composition at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels since 1992. His work — whether in collaboration, solo, or ensemble — has been honored with awards including the Django d’Or and Choc de la Musique. With a career spanning decades, Diederik Wissels remains a central figure in contemporary European jazz, where music, poetry, and sensitivity meet.
